BAPTISM

Baptism is a joyful sacrament in which we are united with Christ and welcomed into the Church. In the Episcopal tradition, a person may be baptized at any age. We welcome infants, children, youth, and adults into this holy celebration.

For infants and children, at least one parent must be an active member of St. James. Parents who bring their children for baptism commit to raising them in the Christian faith. We also gladly welcome adult baptism for members of our parish.
Baptism takes place within our regular worship services, because it is a celebration by the whole community. Some especially meaningful days for baptism include:
-
The Easter Vigil
-
The Day of Pentecost
-
All Saints’ Day
-
The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
-
During the Bishop’s pastoral visit

Godparents and Sponsors
Every baptismal candidate has godparents (for children) or sponsors (for adults). These must be baptized Christians, ideally active in their faith community and in a long-term relationship with the candidate. One to three godparents or sponsors is appropriate. They serve as Christian friends and mentors throughout life, and are typically present at the baptism.

Preparation
A baptismal rehearsal is usually scheduled for the Saturday before. If you are not a member of St. James and wish us to celebrate an infant baptism, we ask that your own parish priest provide a letter affirming your participation in your home church. If this is not possible, additional preparation time may be required.
