RECONCILIATION

The Rite of Reconciliation

Reconciliation—often called Confession—is a sacrament of healing and grace. In it, we acknowledge our sins before God in the presence of a priest, receive words of counsel and comfort, and hear God’s assurance of forgiveness.

"None must, some should, all may."

Who May Receive This Sacrament?

The Reconciliation of a Penitent is available to anyone, at any time. It is not limited to times of sickness or special seasons. Confession is never required for the forgiveness of sins, but many find it deeply helpful. As the old saying goes: “None must, some should, all may.”

How It Happens

Confession can take place anywhere. In church, the priest may sit inside the altar rail or in a private place set aside for the purpose. The penitent may kneel nearby, or the priest and penitent may sit face-to-face for a spiritual conversation leading to absolution.

Sacred Confidentiality

What is said in confession is never repeated. The seal of the confessional is absolute and may not be broken under any circumstances.
