Frequenty asked questions

Whether you're seeking a new faith community or simply visiting for the day, you are welcome here. No matter who you are, whom you love, or where you find yourself on your journey of faith, we invite you to join us as we seek to follow Jesus, day by day.

Why the Red Doors on Episcopal Churches?

As you approach St. James, you’ll notice our red door—a tradition in many Episcopal churches. Historically, a red church door has been a sign of sanctuary, hospitality, and spiritual refuge. It reminds us that this is a sacred space where all who seek God are welcome to come in, to rest, to pray, and to be received with grace.

Wherever you’re coming from, the red door is a sign: you’re not just entering a building—you’re being welcomed into a community.

What Should I Wear?

Wear what feels comfortable and respectful for worship. Some members dress in their “Sunday best,” while others come in more casual attire—like jeans and a nice shirt. The same goes for children. There is no dress code; come as you are.

May I Receive Communion?

In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are invited to receive Communion. When it’s time to come forward, an usher will guide your pew. To receive the bread, hold your right hand over your left, palms up. We currently distribute Communion by intinction, meaning the priest will dip the host into consecrated wine and place it in your hand. The priest will say,
“May the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ keep you in life everlasting,”
to which you may respond, “Amen.”

If you are not baptized, you're still warmly invited to come forward for a blessing. Simply cross your arms over your chest, and the priest will offer a prayer of blessing for you.

Is It Okay to Move Around During the Service?

It’s a common question—even among lifelong Episcopalians! If you need to step out or re-enter the sanctuary, the best times are:

  • Any time when the congregation is standing or singing

  • During the hymn after the second reading

  • During the Passing of the Peace

  • We kindly ask that you avoid moving during Scripture readings, if possible, to help maintain an attentive atmosphere. That said, we understand that unexpected needs—especially with young children—can arise. If something is urgent, please move as needed. You are always welcome here, exactly as you are.

Is There Coffee Hour?

Of course! Around here, it’s affectionately known as the “eighth sacrament.” After the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist, we gather in the parish hall for coffee, light refreshments, and good conversation. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends, ask questions, or simply enjoy some fellowship. You are warmly invited to join us.

How Do I Join the Parish?

We’re glad you’re asking! If you’ve been attending worship and feel that St. James could be your spiritual home, we would love to welcome you more fully into the life of the parish.

There’s no formal checklist to “qualify”—being part of this community begins by showing up, worshiping with us, and being open to growing in faith alongside others.

If you’re new to the Episcopal Church or would like to learn more, we offer occasional opportunities for conversation about what it means to be a member, including baptism, confirmation, or reception (for those coming from other traditions).

To start the conversation about becoming a member, simply speak with Rev. Lewis Crusoe or contact the parish office. We’d be honored to walk that journey with you.
